The Club held the annual Championship Men & Women Pairs There was a good entry of 6 women’s teams and 8 men’s teams. The winners of this event will represent the Far North RSA at the Centre Champions of Champions.
For the 1st time this season the weather was perfect for bowling, not too hot and occasional a little of wind. The format was 4 rounds a day of 18 ends or 1hr 45mins. The 6 women’s teams entered was reduced to two to go into the 2nd day’s play being Jean Huxtable/Tessa Pont (2 lives) v Liz Muru/Lillian Wells (1 life) with Muru comfortable defeating Huxtable and therefore having to play again in the final of 18 ends and no time limit. This was a great exhibition of bowling to the delight of the spectators the score being 9-8 after11 ends in Huxtable’s favour and 11 all at 13 ends. Muru the hit the front at the 14th end scoring two shots and maintained the lead to win the championship 13-16. The men’s section was reduced to 3(all I life) Barry Allison/Allan Thom v Marty Doak/Russell Hockley. Peter Dorreen/Paul Huxtable a bye. Allison got away to a good start up 13-2 at the 9th end, Doak then made a comeback to be 5 shots behind at the 16 end 10-15 but did not score again with Allison going into the final against Huxtable and Dorreen. As in the women’s game we saw another great game of bowls with the score 10 all at 14th end. Dorreen scored 5 shots in the next 2 ends to be ahead 15-10. Allison hit back with 4 shots in the last 2 ends but not enough with Dorreen & Huxtable winning 15-14. We wish both teams well in the Centre Champions of Champions later on in the season. Thank you Katarina and Club ladies who looked after the kitchen, Jean & Tupu Match Controllers and Ian, Allan & Mike for preparing the green. Also thanks to the good turnout of spectators who witnessed some great bowls.
