The club held the Men & Women’s Triples Championship over the weekend 9-10 December. There were 4 entries in or the Women’s Section and 6 entries in the Men’s section.
The women’s section was completed on the 1st day with Val Jones, Liz Muru & Lillian Wells with 2 lives playing Freda May, Adele Gardner & Glenis Muir in the final. In a great match Jones went out 7 – 1 at the 5th end. May then won the next 6 ends to lead 10-7 at the 11th end. Jones regained the lead to be 2 shots ahead 14-12 on the penultimate end. May scored 1 shot on the last end with Jones and her team taking out the Championship Triples title 14-13
The Men’ section went through to the second day with three teams remaining. Mike Reddy, Alan Thom & 10-year-old Kiripaka Kara with 2 lives and with 1 life were Tupu Campbell, 12-year-old Brian Cox, Selwyn Hargreaves and Peter Dorreen, Paul Huxtable, Greg Taylor. The 1st match in the morning saw the experienced Dorreen’s team eliminate Campbell with Reddy having a bye. In the final/possible final Reddy got away to good start up 6-1 after 3 ends, Dorreen scored 5 shots at the 5th end to take the lead 7-6 which was short lived with Reddy regaining the lead and holding on to win 20-17 in a thrilling final with great bowls played by both teams and was watched by a good number of spectators. Congratulations to Kiripaka Kara in his second year and at 10 years old is the Club’s youngest open championship winner. It was also good to see 12-year-old Brian Cox making it through to 3rd place.
